Peter Wright captured his first tournament of the year at the German Darts Championships in Hildesheim.

Snakebite defeated Luke Littler, Dave Chisnall, and Michael van Gerwen on his way to his maiden trophy of the year and looked visibly upset after his victory over the Dutchman.

Peter Wright has since revealed the real reason he broke down on stage after defeating Mighty Mike.

Peter Wright cried because he matched Michael van Gerwen

Wright shared that the reason he became emotional after his 6-4 victory over the World No. 3 was because he was giving the darts legend a good game.

Speaking to Weekly DartsCast, Wright said: “He’s not really in bad form. He got to the final of the Matchplay and he should’ve won that, and with his averages, he’s near enough back to the old Michael van Gerwen.

“The fact I could compete with him after what I’d been through, that’s why I got so upset.”

Snakebite has had a difficult time on tour during 2024, but Wright showed confidence before the New Zealand Darts Masters in August and turned his luck around a few weeks later.

Wright could be a force heading into the World Championships

After Wright overcame ‘pretty terrible’ form at the World Matchplay in July, Snakebite looks to be finding his form at an important time.

The World Series of Darts Finals, the World Grand Prix, and the World Championships all take place within three months and Wright will fancy himself for the events.

Wright has won the World Championships twice but is yet to capture the World Grand Prix. Snakebite’s biggest success in the tournament was reaching the final in Dublin in 2018.

With vital wins under his belt, and confidence growing, Wright could be one to watch as we head into the final stages of the season.
