Michael van Gerwen captured his first ranking title of the year at the Players Championship 21 in Wigan.

The Dutchman defeated Dave Chisnall in the final of the Pro Tour event in his first Players Championship final since March 2023.

Much has been made of Michael van Gerwen’s form this year and Wayne Mardle has made a tongue-in-cheek remark about the Dutchman after his victory.

Wayne Mardle jokes about Michael van Gerwen’s form

The Dutchman has not been at his best for long stretches of the year and van Gerwen has suffered medical setbacks, but his performances have been better than his results over the last few months.

After his Pro Tour victory over Chisnall, Mardle took to X to joke with his followers about Mighty Mike’s form.

Posting a leg-by-leg breakdown of the final between the pair, the 51-year-old said: “Imagine if MVG was playing well. Haha.”

van Gerwen 106.67 in the final against Chisnall, hit 16 scores of 140+, and a 158 checkout to capture his first ranking title of the year.

MVG’s form is better than most think

Wayne Mardle is not the only person who has noticed Michael van Gerwen’s under-the-radar good form in the last few months.

Peter Wright believes van Gerwen is starting to hit top form and even became emotional after defeating the Dutchman at the German Darts Championships.

Speaking to Weekly DartsCast, Wright said: “He’s not really in bad form. He got to the final of the Matchplay and he should’ve won that, and with his averages, he’s near enough back to the old Michael van Gerwen.

“The fact I could compete with him after what I’d been through, that’s why I got so upset.”

The current World No. 3 is hitting good form right in time for the World Grand Prix and the World Championships at the end of the year.
