Peter Wright ‘in shock’ at what happened on the PDC Pro Tour last week

Peter Wright has had a torrid time since the start of last year.

The two-time World Champion has struggled for form and results, epitomised by two dismal Premier League campaigns where he finished rock bottom.

He managed to capture the European Championship last October, but the surprise win was not a turning point for Wright.

Though his form on the Pro Tour has improved this year, he failed to qualify for the Players Championship Finals in 2023 – a title he was defending – after finishing outside the top 64 best-performing players on the circuit.

‘Snakebite’ revealed his thoughts on his form to Alex Moss of the Weekly Dartscast last week in Milton Keynes.

Peter Wright joked about poor form after win

Wright only managed to register one win from three events last week.

Speaking on the Weekly Dartscast podcast, co-host Alex Moss commented on his brief encounter with the Scotsman at the Players Championship events.

He said: “I saw Peter briefly when I went to the Pro Tour last week. We were getting a drink at the bar and Peter was one of the first players we saw.

“He recognised me after not seeing him for a while, and I saw that he’d won his first game and I said, ‘Well done, a good start to the day.’

“And he joked saying ‘I won a game!’ In shock that he hadn’t lost in the first round.”

Wright’s form a serious concern despite jokes

Wright may be able to find humour in his troubling form, but things must change soon for the former world number one.

His first-round exit to Andrew Gilding at the World Matchplay rubberstamped a difficult year and he’s fallen outside of the world’s top 10.

The 54-year-old seems to have run out of ideas as experimenting with his set-up and even his throw has not yielded a consistent upturn in form.

Despite his woes, the ten-time major winner is defending very little from his ranking between now and the World Championship.

As a result, he is provisionally set to retain his world ranking of 12 following the showpiece event.

With this knowledge, the pressure may ease on Wright’s shoulders and fans of the colourful character will hope that will spur ‘Snakebite’ on to rediscover his best darts.
