Wayne Mardle says Luke Humphries could now do something no other darts player ever has

Luke Humphries has been brilliant at the World Matchplay so far.

The World Champion has dispatched both Ricardo Pietreczko and Stephen Bunting with two dazzling performances.

Humphries has put in two incredible showings so far, averaging just shy of 109 in his first match and just a shade below 103 in his second game.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Tuesday evening, Wayne Mardle was in awe of Humphries’ form at the World Matchplay, claiming before his game against Bunting that we may see the Englishman break a PDC record.

Indeed, Mardle says that we may see Humphries break the all-time tournament average record this week, noting that Cool Hand could become the first player ever to average 108 throughout an entire tournament run.

Luke Humphires could break tournament average record

Mardle made a bold prediction about Humphries.

“Nobody has ever averaged 108 over a tournament. 105, 106, yes, but is anyone capable of doing that in this field? One man, and that’s him (Luke Humphries),” Mardle said.

Luke Humphries is on fire

Mardle’s claim is bold, but you wouldn’t back against Humphries breaking this record.

The record for the highest average in a TV tournament is currently held by Michael van Gerwen, who averaged 106 at the 2017 Masters.

Interestingly, Humphries has won a stage event with a higher average, smashing a 107.51 average during a winning effort in Munich this year.

As Mardle says, Humphries is capable of producing performances right now the like of which we may never have seen before, and it’s hard to pick anyone else as the eventual Matchplay champion as things stand.

Whether or not Humphries can actually break this record this week remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, Dimitri van den Bergh has a tough task ahead in the quarter-finals at the Winter Gardens.
