Gary Anderson picks 2015 Phil Taylor clash as greatest performance
In 2015, if Anderson wanted to be crowned the World Darts Champion for the first time he would have to get the best of the greatest player to ever grace darts.
Anderson defeated the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright to set up a clash with then-World No. 2 Phil Taylor.
The Power was looking for his 17th World Darts Championship, but Anderson turned in a sublime performance to earn his maiden crown.
The stunning match, which went to a last-set decider, is considered one of the greatest finals of all time and Anderson ranks his performance in the match as his all-time best.
Speaking to Sky Sports ‘My Greatest Game’, Anderson said: “A lot of the boys now that are coming through, they’ll never ever get to play Phil Taylor on that stage.
“He’s won it sixteen times, if you are going to beat someone, it’s got to be him just to put that big notch on your belt.”
“It’s great, that’s what we all play darts for. Everyone who plays darts wants to make it to the Ally Pally and play in the World Championship, just to play in it is a great job done. To win it, you can pat yourself on the back for that.”
Anderson would continue his superb form on the Ally Pally stage by picking up another World Championship a year later, defeating Adrian Lewis in the final.
Practice doesn’t make perfect for Gary Anderson
Anderson is one of the most naturally gifted darts players the game has ever seen and he’s reached the peak of the sport without event practicing.
The star, who was still as impressive as ever in 2024, boasting one of the highest averages for the calendar year, revealed he rarely plays darts outside of tournament play.
Speaking at the Grand Slam of Darts, Anderson said: “Because I’ll tell you, I don’t practice. I don’t practice, but nobody believes me!”
He continued: “Stick a camera and follow me about for a year and we’ll see. Get some other boys to do it and we’ll see what happens. I really don’t [practice].”
Anderson puts his lack of practice down to his experience in the game, suggesting: “I’ve played darts for a long time, 30-odd years. If you don’t know where the treble 20 is by now… take up another hobby.”
Anderson suffered a surprise World Darts Championship exit at the hands of Jeffrey De Zwaan.
