Defending World Matchplay Champion Nathan Aspinall had to battle against Luke Woodhouse last night to preserve his title defence.
Aspinall has been battling a serious arm injury for several months which has affected his game.
There were serious question marks surrounding ‘The Asp’ heading into Blackpool after he pulled out of a European Tour event last month amid concerns.
The 32-year-old, who celebrates his birthday tomorrow, admitted that he is pessimistic about the possibility of defending his title.
Speaking to Darts Now, Aspinall spoke candidly about his issues and revealed he is taking an extended break from darts to focus on treatment.

Nathan Aspinall to put darts down after World Matchplay campaign
Fortunately for Aspinall, surgery is not required on his arm and instead will undergo non-invasive shockwave therapy.
After his victory over Woodhouse, he said: “This is my last tournament and then I’m having my treatment done so I am leaving everything on that stage. I am trying my everything off to win a game to defend my title, I’m trying everything I can.
“After this tournament, I’m away for 2-3 months so that’s why it’s extra special because I know it’s the last time I’m going to throw a dart.”
An emotional Aspinall added: “Darts is my life; I absolutely love darts. It’s my passion, it’s my love, it’s my life and I’m not going to throw a dart for 12 weeks so rest assured, I ain’t going out without a fight.”
Concerns will grow for Aspinall as format extends
Aspinall competed in last week’s Pro Tour events but he himself will not know how his arm will hold up in a best of 31 leg match.
He visibly winced at times in his opening match yesterday but will have to battle in a race to 16 if he was to win one more match.
The Stockport man joked his plan was to win 16-0 but admitted he will have to sit down with his medical team to forge a plan if he reaches the quarter-final.
Up next is either James Wade or Danny Noppert.
Both players will see a clash with the injured Aspinall as an opportunity which raises the stakes for their match this afternoon.
