Michael van Gerwen produced a ton-topping average to prevail over Luke Littler at the World Matchplay last night.
The mouth-watering tie was arguably the most anticipated first-round match in recent memory, and it did not disappoint.
Both players averaged in three figures, but the three-time World Matchplay Champion controlled throughout as Littler trailed.
Littler captured the Premier League trophy on debut in May and was expected to make a similar impact in Blackpool.
‘The Green Machine’ powered past the teenager, however, and delivered a strong message about Littler after the victory.

Michael van Gerwen says Luke Littler should not be feared
The two darting heavyweights have clashed an astonishing ten times since the start of the year, with MVG securing six victories.
Speaking to Darts Now, Van Gerwen stressed that players should not be scared of the 17-year-old.
He said: “He’s been good, he’s been playing really well but we also can see that he’s not unstoppable.
“It’s a sign maybe also for the rest of the players who are scared of him to face it, to do the right thing, to play your own game instead of his game.”
Littler has aura that can affect players
Van Gerwen’s point is a valid one.
Littler’s success and star power commands an aura which can mentally affect players before a dart is thrown.
The Dutchman has experienced something similar in his peak, as did 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor.
Despite the achievements of the youngster, he does have vulnerabilities.
He appeared to grow frustrated with himself in his defeat at the Winter Gardens.
Littler brandished his performance ‘embarrassing’ in a now-deleted Instagram post.
That is an unfair criticism of himself, however, given the standard of his opponent and the high-quality of his own performance in defeat.
Though the loss will sting, 2024 has been record-breaking for ‘The Nuke’ and expect him to respond to this setback in emphatic style.
