Matthew Edgar has shared what he thinks Michael Smith needs to add to his game if he’s to truly dominate in the PDC.

The Bully Boy became champion of the world when he beat Michael van Gerwen in 2023.

A World Championship was his just reward for a dominant few months that saw him win his first television title just a couple of weeks before the Ally Pally event.

Smith has gone off the boil a little bit during the current campaign, however and he’s yet to truly get going this season.

His reign as World Champion came to an end with a drab 4-0 defeat to Chris Dobey and last week Luke Littler beat him 10-5 in the semi-final of the Premier League.

Now, Edgar has tried to give Smith some advice ahead of some big tournaments on the horizon.

What Matthew Edgar said about Michael Smith

The man who has claimed a world title is now someone who truly believes he can rock up to the big events and win them.

A life-changing win like the World Championship can do funny things for people in their careers but Smith hasn’t really kicked on just yet.

Edgar thinks something is missing from his game still and he has offered the St Helens-based thrower some advice.

He told the Love the Darts podcast: “It wasn’t long ago that he was battling out the World Championship final and he had the greatest leg ever seen.

“Dare I say the fear factor isn’t there at the moment with Michael Smith in regards to how other players view him.

“Maybe that’s something he has to address. Maybe he’s too nice. He is a great guy, he really is a great guy, maybe he’s too friendly in the backroom.”

Smith in danger of being overtaken again

For ages, it must have felt to Smith like he would forever be the bridesmaid and never get to sample the big day for himself.

However, he’s now achieved television titles and perhaps he’s slipped into the comfort zone a little bit of late.

Smith does need to get his ideas booked up a little bit and get back on the bike in his quest for consistency this season.

With the likes of Luke Littler and Luke Humphries now starting to showcase on a regular basis what they’re capable of, there is some serious talent in the world of darts.

Smith it still at a nice age at 33 but he won’t want to keep watching others win the titles that he knows he is good enough to win on his day.
