Michael van Gerwen’s homecoming at the Dutch Darts Masters didn’t go to plan and his closest confidant Vince van der Voort thinks he knows why.

Mighty Mike crashed out in the quarterfinals to Luke Littler in his first tournament since losing the World Darts Championship final.

The star was an overwhelming favourite in Den Bosch, but fans were left disappointed by Michael van Gerwen’s 6-3 loss to The Nuke.

Vincent van der Voort noticed something about the way that van Gerwen was playing that he believes he desperately needs to address.

Michael van Gerwen ‘stood wrong’ against Luke Littler

The Dutchman was looking to bounce back from his defeat to the teenager but once again saw his tournament hopes fade due to The Nuke.

Mighty Mike’s closest friend, former PDC star Vincent van der Voort, believes van Gerwen is not throwing the way he usually does.

Speaking to Darts Draait Door, the two-time World Darts Championship quarterfinalist said: “He started throwing cramped. That’s all you shouldn’t do, but he’s trying. I think he stood wrong, a little too far forward.

“And then you end up too low. But he could also have been too eager. Then you overcompensate and things go wrong. It will be fine, but it’s going to take time.”

The Dutchman is next in action at the Winmau World Masters in a first-round clash against Bradley Brooks.

The Dutchman has become synonymous with his luminous green shirt on the oche, but that’s all about to change.

The man named ‘The Green Machine’ due to his fashion choice has ditched the colour to celebrate his five-year anniversary with Winmau.

The star will wear black and gold at the Winmau World Masters and he’ll be hoping it brings him his first tournament in October.

van Gerwen picked up the Players Championship 27 on the Pro Tour in Wigan by defeating Gerwyn Price in the final.
