Andrew Gilding reached his first ever World Matchplay quarterfinal last night and will take on Michael van Gerwen.
The 53-year-old produced a 98.30 average to comfortably beat Krzysztof Ratajski 11-5.
His battle with Van Gerwen tomorrow will be a rematch of their 2023 UK Open final where Gilding produced one of the biggest upsets seen on the big stage to lift his only PDC title.
Though affectionately known as ‘Goldfinger’, he revealed that ‘Mighty Mike’ has another nickname for him that is better suited.

Michael van Gerwen full of respect for Andrew Gilding
Gilding’s persona on stage is timid in stark contrast to the explosive prowess of the Dutchman.
Speaking to Darts Now, Gilding revealed this quality prompted Van Gerwen to issue him a new nickname.
He said: “What is it Michael van Gerwen called me? The Assassin, so hopefully [people will be scared of me].”
‘The Green Machine’ spoke to media after his second round victory over Joe Cullen last night and heaped praised on Gilding.
He said: “We all know Andrew is a good player and he’s probably one of the most underestimated players on the tour. When he’s on it, he can be really dangerous.”
Gilding entering uncharted territory
The quarterfinal increases to best of 31 legs, a format the 2023 UK Open Champion has never experienced.
In contrast, Van Gerwen has a wealth of experience over elongated formats and has lifted the World Matchplay trophy three times.
‘Goldfinger’ could find ways to frustrate his opponent, however.
The Dutchman has been prone to lapses in concentration in games and Gilding’s methodical pace coupled with the long format could create issues for the World Number Two.
The Suffolk-born man will justifiably begin as a huge underdog to dump out one of the favourites for the tournament but as Van Gerwen highlighted, Gilding should not be underestimated.
